Star Shelter Coffee Appreciation Workshop (by Joe & Dough) and some thoughts

April 11, 2010 at 10:30 pm | Posted in Let's Care and Celebrate | 6 Comments

Joe & Dough presented a coffee appreciation workshop for 5 residents of the Star Shelter. The attendees learnt more about making coffee, and how to be a good barista.

Due to privacy issues, we were not allowed to take pictures of the Star Shelter residents. They had some fun through the hands-on with the coffee machine though.

Damien, the owner of Joe & Dough, also shared with them the demands of a job in the F&B sector, and the qualities that employers usually look for when they are hiring service staff. I found it a very useful workshop and even suggested that J&D should work with more charity organisations to hold such workshops for their beneficiaries in future!

With that, my first anniversary campaign “Let’s Care and Celebrate!” has come to an end. I started thinking of doing a charity project via the blog since last year but we were too late for Christmas season. Joe & Dough came into the picture really early and our initial idea was to produce an original single by Only After Coffee and sell the CD online or at the cafe.

Naturally, due to high production cost that we had to cough out, we aborted this idea and moved on. For many months, I thought I was going to have a flea market where me and my fellow blogger friends would set up stalls and proceeds would go to the SCWO-Star Shelter. Only After Coffee was even designated as the resident entertainer of the flea. There will be cupcakes and coffee, maybe even a manicurist to do free manicure for flea-ers!

I approached many cafes and bars that were suitably sized for the crowd I was expecting. Unfortunately, none was willing to sponsor their venue on a weekend. There was also a charity licence that I had to apply and the lack of venue made it almost impossible to proceed. 3 weeks before the Saturday that the flea market was supposed to happen, I suddenly thought of a Charity Online Auction and how it could actually solve the venue problem. Without further ado, I contacted the bloggers that I know and everything went rather smoothly thereafter.

This is a true blog charity campaign because everyone of you got to know about this charity and this project via blogs and other social media platforms. I would like to thank:

  • Joe & Dough for being so supportive. I got to know them through my blog and the journey has been amazing. Please join their Facebook fan page.
  • Dottie, X-Wen, Karen, BB, Mag, Nicole, Gidania and Heinz for your contribution and plug on your blogs/RTs/Facebook!
  • Wiwit for your time at the makeup workshop for the residents.
  • Noemi for your lovely illustrations and Only After Coffee for that wonderful song.
  • Many fellow bloggers who had kindly blogged about this campaign.
  • Fellow tweeples for your constant RTs!
  • Friends who have helped to spread the word via Facebook.
  • Kiehl’s for your lovely product set, which is certainly a “sweetener” (quoting a comment) to the whole Charity Auction!
  • Of course, all of you who have bid for the items.
  • And my friends who had to listen to me all the time, and help me solve my problems or think of solutions. What could I do without you?

If you only got to know about the campaign and the charity today, it’s never too late to help. You can be a volunteer, or make donations to SCWO-Star Shelter (details here).

Thanks and I hope you will still visit Miss Glitzy’s Monologue. While we continue to enjoy our quality lifestyles, do pause and spare a thought for those around us – be it your family, loved ones, friends – as well as those in need.

Thanks everyone for your support, the Give a Gift Charity Auction has come to an end.

Well, I was initially worried that no one would bid in the auction. Now almost all the items are sold and the amount raised also exceeded my own expectations.

On another note, the Joe & Dough Coffee Appreciation Workshop for the Star Shelter residents was held yesterday and it went rather well. I will blog more about the event and my thoughts about the whole “Let’s Care and Celebrate!” campaign soon.

And once all the winners have made payment, I will select the lucky recipient of the Kiehl’s Ultimate White Set.

Meanwhile, have a fabulous Sunday!

Remaking lives of abused women (The New Paper, 6 Sep 2009)

April 4, 2010 at 3:25 pm | Posted in Let's Care and Celebrate | 1 Comment

(This is an extract of an article published on The New Paper in 2009. It shows a case study of Mandy, a Star Shelter resident. Click on the link to read the full article)

WHEN Mandy, 39, smiles in front of the mirror, the missing tooth she sees is a reminder of the physical abuse she suffered from her husband.

But hopefully, in a few months, Mandy (we are not using her real name to protect her identity) will once again see her pretty face with a perfect smile.

That’s because Pacific Healthcare Group will start offering battered women like her free health services, including reconstructive surgery. Today, the group will officially adopt Star Shelter, a temporary refuge for women, babies and young children who are in abusive relationships.

Beaten, she lost a tooth

Mandy’s ordeal began five years ago when her husband of over 10 years began beating her. In an e-mail exchange with The New Paper, she said the couple had quarrelled when she found out he was having an affair. Furious, he started beating her.

Recalling the first beating, she wrote: ‘I didn’t expect him to lay his hands on me. My face was swollen and my back hurt.

“I cried and felt depressed. I kept questioning myself and wondered if I had done anything wrong.”

That was the first of many other ‘regular’ beatings for the housewife and mother of two school children.

In one of the worst beatings, her husband hit her so hard he knocked out a tooth, leaving her mouth bloodied.

Besides the physical abuse, her husband would also abuse her verbally, calling her a ‘pig’ and ‘ugly’.

Fortunately, Mandy was referred by a family service centre to Star Shelter this year. She has been living at the shelter along with more than 20 other women for the past five months. To ensure the protection of these abused women, the shelter, which is an initiative of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) doesn’t divulge its address.

The abuse has affected Mandy’s self-esteem.

She said: “I am not sure how the doctors can help me, but I do want to look prettier and do something about my missing tooth.”

Madam Azrahayu Ahmad Afandi, 30, the manager of Star Shelter, said the issue of image is especially important for these women. She said most of the battered women she sees don’t care how they look because they have low self-esteem after years of abuse.

She said: “Over here, I encourage them to dress up, put on some lipstick, because even that makes a difference to how they view themselves.”

“For me the most rewarding thing is to watch them grow, to realise their own potential and stand on their own two feet.”

Abuse cuts across all socio-economic sectors, she said, as she has seen all sorts of women who have been subjected to abuse. One common factor in the profile of these women, however, is that they tend to be giving and self-sacrificing. They also tend to be financially dependent on their husbands, may view divorce as a stigma and are worried about their kids growing up without a father, said Madam Azrahayu.

She said: “Family violence is usually about power and control. These men are violent because they want to show their authority. Sad to say, some might have come from violent families themselves, so it becomes a cycle.”

Victims of abuse can call the SCWO mainline at 68370611 or the Family Service Centres hotline at 1800 838 0100.

Love Thy Neighbour – Song for “Let’s Care and Celebrate!”

Yes, how can I leave Only After Coffee out of this “Let’s Care and Celebrate!” project?

The band has kindly written and produced this song, “Love Thy Neighbour” for the campaign. The song urges us to spare a thought for everyone around us and be ready to give a helping hand. I also approached the very talented Noemi, who kindly agreed to draw for the music video. A blog artist based in Indonesia, she is really really talented and I hope more and more people will get to know her unique water-colour artworks.

Back to the music video, the key objective of SCWO-Star Shelter is to help women who have been abused. These women are usually referred by the Family Court, The Family Service Centres, the Police, hospitals and crisis helplines. Noemi illustrated various scenarios of abuse, such as a girl who was abused at home and silently crying for help. In addition, there was also a case of very bad verbal abuse, a terrified child and a broken-hearted girl who was abused by her boyfriend.

The reality is, some victims will hesitate to get help. Thus, it is important for us to show care and support to our close friends and if anyone of them shows symptoms of abuse, we are there for them. A study has shown that a growing number of educated women experience domestic violence, so there are reasons to believe that domestic abuse is more prevalent than we think.

Some helplines that we can call:
PAVe: 6555 0390
Samaritans of Singapore: 1800-221 4444
AWARE helpline: 1800-774 5935
Care Corner Counselling Centre: 1800-353 5800

Give a Gift Charity Auction – here comes guilt-free shopping!

March 19, 2010 at 10:33 am | Posted in Let's Care and Celebrate | Leave a comment
Tags: , , , , ,

Part of the Let’s Care and Celebrate! campaign, the Give a Gift Charity Auction is an opportunity to touch many lives through shopping!

There will be a series of fashion items available for bidding over a 2-week period. If you win the auction, you will make payment by donating the amount to SCWO (via DBS bank transfer or cheque payment) and I will mail the item to you! Kindly note that only Singaporeans or those residing in Singapore can take part.

I am really fortunate to have the kind support of several popular bloggers! They readily agreed to contribute to this event when I approached them! So, be prepared to see contributions from:

The auction will commence in 2 batches. The first batch of items will start to accept bids from 22nd March (Monday) at 12pm sharp, and this auction will end on 28th March (Sunday) 12pm. Similarly, the next auction starts on 29th March 12pm and ends on 4th April noon.

All winners will be notified via email and “payment” will be made by donating the amount directly to SCWO. Once I have verified that the donation is completed, I will mail the item out via registered mail to your address. Registered postage is on the house so 100% of your donation goes direct to SCWO-Star Shelter!

How can your donation help?

  • The money can be used for day-to-day operation at the Star Shelter. The shelter provides a temporary refuge to women and their children from family violence and operating costs is about $250,000 annually .
  • The donation will be used as part of a Rebuilding Programme – a financial assistance scheme that provides a one-time financial aid to assist victims to pay for transport expenses while looking for employment as well as a no interest home loan, which enables victims to setup a new home.

SCWO-Star Shelter also provides trauma/crisis counseling and legal counseling for the residents. Even after the residents move out of the shelter, the organisation will still provide after-care support by staying in touch with them and making regular house visits.

Keep a look out for my blog post on the first Auction on Monday, 12pm! You can place your bids by commenting on that post! 🙂
